Introduction: Aravind Eye Hospitals (Aravind), (a $11million venture) based atMadurai, India, is one of the largest eye hospitals in the world, and the single largest provider of eye surgeries in terms of scale. In 2003, the doctors atAravind Hospitals handled 1,480,012 outpatient visits and performed 197,877 surgeries. Started as a 11 bed hospital by Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, the Aravind conglomerate consists of five hospitals in Tamil Nadu, an intraocular lens manufacturing unit and community development and research institutes (Exhibit I).Though two-third of the surgeries are performed free of cost,Aravind is financially self-sufficient.
